How to add tropical fish to your biOrb

Reef One’s incredibly popular biOrb fish tanks are often used for goldfish, but with the exception of the new larger biOrb 105, they’re really a bit too small.

Instead, the experts at UK online retailer Swell UK recommend that you keep small coldwater fish, such as White Cloud Mountain minnows in them, or upgrade your biOrb so it’s suitable for tropical fish.

Even if you have a warm, centrally-heated house, you’ll need a heater-thermostat if you want to keep tropical fish in your biOrb. A heater prevents the biOrb water temperature from fluctuating too much and maintains a constant warmth for the fish.

When it comes to heating you’ve really got two main options: the standard biOrb Heater Pack or the new biOrb Intelligent Heater.

The standard biOrb Heater Pack uses a conventional glass heater-thermostat of the same type you’d use in a standard glass fish tank. However, it’s supplied with a special stick on heater stand that allows it to be used within the confines of a spherical tank.

It does the job and is quite inexpensive, but it doesn’t add to the aesthetics, so you’ll want to try and conceal it behind some of the biOrb Decor that Reef One have produced for this very thing.

The more modern method is to use the new biOrb Intelligent Heater and Powerpod. This stylish looking gadget runs a 50 watt heater from a 12 volt power supply – something which is unique in the aquarium world – creating a heater that’s surely the safest on the market today.

When it comes to choosing fish you do need to take special care, as the smaller biOrbs are not too spacious. We’d recommend opting for small nano-friendly species, such as small tetras and rasboras and avoiding any fish that grow larger than a couple of inches.
